Abstract
Clinical effects of oral bacampicillin were investigated in 30 children with upper or lower respiratory tract infection. The dosage administered depend on the body weight of the child: bacampicillin syrup was given 25mg/kg/day in those less than 20kg body weight and 800mg/day in those over 20kg in two divided dose for 5 to 14days.
21 cases with respiratory infections caused by known organisms resulted in good response in 15 cases (71.4%), improvement in 4 cases (19.0%), ineffectiveness in 2 cases and in the efficacy being 90.4%.
There were good therapeutic effects in the cases caused by beta-hemolytic streptococcus (10), Streptococcus pneumoniae (6), Hemophilus influenzae (1), Enterococcus (2) infection, but the 2 cases with Klebsiella pneumoniae and anaerobic Bacteroides infections did not response to bacampicillin.
The oral administration of bacampicillin was well tolerated in all children without any symptoms or signs of side effects.
From the above results, bacampicillin syrup was proven to be a useful antibiotics for childhood upper and lower respiratory tract infections.
